UN Secretary-General Calls for Ceasefire Following Death of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar

He asserted that his death could serve as a good reason to promote a ceasefire.

In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that the death of one of Hamas’s leaders, Yahya Sinwar, should “lead to an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid in Gaza.”

While he refrained from commenting on this incident despite repeated inquiries, he did assert that this death could serve as a good reason to promote a ceasefire.

The secretary’s spokesperson, Farhan Haq, recalled that Tor Wennesland, the UN’s special coordinator, has stated that this event marks “a critical moment” in the Gaza war.

“Via his deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, Guterres clarified that he “does not comment on events of this nature,” after being repeatedly asked about his assessment of the assassination of Hamas leader Sinouar”.

“We must seize the moment,” Wennesland said, as quoted by the spokesperson, “to silence the guns and release the hostages” (it is estimated that 101 remain, alive or dead) and for “the parties to engage in dialogue and reach an agreement.”

The death of Yahya Sinwar may serve as a catalyst for change, but it is essential that concrete measures are taken to ensure peace and security in the region. Only through dialogue and cooperation can a lasting solution be achieved that benefits all parties involved.
